The inspiration for this project, Riptide, came from the actual song title itself by Vance joy. As soon as I heard this song for the first time, lots of ideas were flowing through my head. I kept hearing this song over and over again in my car every time I got stuck in traffic, then I started to build up ideas. I also wanted to combine a classic fairy tale but giving it a bit of a twist of local elements and painting process.
The painting was the first task to be completed along with filming. Next, were the illustrations and animation sequences. Finally, all the bits and pieces were incorporated together through video editing.
I would definitely annoy you if I had to mention my challenges on this project since there was so many, but the most difficult part was animation sequences. I had that fear that the viewers wouldn't get the idea of instant cut from footage to animation. In my head it worked but when it came to production it wasn't that clear. So I came up with a solution that the footage sequences represents the present and the animation sequences represents the past, and I tried to blend them nicely to make everything makes sense (including the flipflop) which I believe I succeeded.
Certainly, this was the toughest project I completed to date. It took me a year and a half on this project.
